» CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character NAME: Nunnally Vi Britannia
Canon & MEDIUM: Code Geass: Nightmare of Nunnally (Manga)
Canon PULL-POINT: Post-series
Character AGE: 14
Character ABILITIES:

In the series, Nunnally has the ability of Geass, a power that can do many different things. While in ‘Lelouch of the Rebellion’, it focuses more on the mental abilities such as ‘Absolute Obedience’ or Mao’s ability to read minds, ‘Nightmare of Nunnally’ makes them physical. Examples include Alice’s ‘The Speed’ in which she can move lightning fast or one of the Irregulars’ ‘The Land’ in which they could map out a terrain and track someone.

Nunnally in the series has TWO Geass abilities: one by a contract with Nemo and one born within her. The first Geass given by Nemo gives her the ability to ‘read the lines of the future’: basically premonition like the Knight of One in LoR except with more accuracy. Nunnally and Nemo used this mainly in battle to predict an opponent's moves and one time Nemo used it on Suzaku to learn where the next battle would be held.

The second is known as a Wired: not needed to make a contract but rather born with, is called ‘The Zero’. It has the ability to return everything to ‘zero’. When I say everything, I mean everything. Humankind would become one collective being, therefore erasing the idea of conflict ever again. Marianne and Charles tried to convince Nunnally to use it, making their dream of a kind and gentle world a reality.

The Zero however is only willed once: when Nunnally nearly accepts her parents' suggestion to use it to reverse humanity and become one. The only other time when she had almost used it was when she was a little girl living on the Kururugi estate. When Genbu Kururugi tries to kill Lelouch, Nunnally pleads for him to stop and he feels a sudden pain in his chest. Before she knew what was happening, C.C. comes in and kills the prime minster.

"Genbu Kururugi. Your life is mine. I can't let the hands of Marianne's daughter become soiled."

By watching C.C.'s actions, we can assume that Nunnally can also bring physical harm to someone but only if the situation is dire such as the mentioned example. She didn't realize this power until her arrival on Kamine Island and explained by Marianne. Due to the possible godmod of this ability, I am fine with it being completely nerfed and unable to use.

Character HISTORY:

General info of canon. It gives a breakdown of each chapter pretty well.

Character PERSONALITY:

If one were to describe Nunnally, they would say she is kind hearted, patient, and understanding. We also see in ‘Nightmare of Nunnally’ that she is a strong woman despite the inability to walk or see. While people do notice her kindness, they are unaware that she too can get angry and feel like someone should pay for their crimes. However, she doesn’t go hellbent on the subject like others.

Nunnally is extremely kind hearted and judges no one until she understands who the person is. Unlike other Britannians or royals, she doesn’t refer to the Japanese as ‘Elevens’, the name given to them. Instead, she calls them Japanese. In general, she treats everyone with the same respect and kindness even if they’re mean and spiteful to her. When a group of girls arrive to bully Nunnally, she replies in a neutral way and excuses herself to go to class. But the head bully goes a bit further by saying that Nunnally is a freeloader and from ‘some poor noble family’. Instead of ranting or getting angry, she replies:

“I understand that you were born to high nobility. But that is no concern to me.”

We see in this statement that Nunnally’s view of people is not skewed by most of her family’s vision. While she is a princess, she doesn’t throw that title around but instead taking the higher road as some would say. We see that she has made friends with the student council and Milly Ashford whose family had taken in Nunnally and Lelouch after the war. While the older woman is related to Nunnally’s departed mother, her family was stripped of their nobility status. Poor or rich, it doesn’t matter to Nunnally: it’s the character that matters in her eyes.

Along with this kindness, we can also say that Nunnally can be stubborn at times. The most obvious is when Lelouch tells her and Nemo not to get involved in fighting and she ends up doing it by entering the battles at Saitama and Narita. During the hostage situation at Lake Kawaguchi, Lieutenant Colonel Kusakabe tells her that the “stubbornness must run in the bloodline” after she tells him that she had no intention of helping him. It didn’t help that he knew her as a princess and revealed it. Even after explaining his idea, she still refuses to help him.

”You people have stolen many innocent lives and mostly just to prove a point. I will not help people like that.”

With this stubbornness, Nunnally also shows maturity that we don’t see in the original version. Like in the previous examples with the bullies and Kusakabe, she doesn’t whimper or whine but holds steady to her side despite how much they rant and rave in order to win. She keeps her emotions in check during the meeting until Kusakabe takes Alice and threatens to kill her if she didn’t cooperate. It ended with them shooting Alice and Nunnally in despair, which summoned her Knightmare Frame below her feet.

Family and friends are important to Nunnally; they’re everything to her. We see the relationships with everyone she surrounds herself with. The main one is with Lelouch: the caring older brother and how big of an impact we see he has made on her. Unlike in ‘Lelouch of the Rebellion’ in which Nunnally is the driving force, in Nightmare of Nunnally, Lelouch is Nunnally’s driving force for why she fights with Nemo and has the power of geass. Instead of returning to Ashford Academy like in LoR, he vanishes after C.C. awakens. After he vanishes, we see how much it impacts her daily life and how she seems to dislike her own country. Her view changes in the end.

”I feel no loyalty to Britannia.”

When she is reunited with him, it’s bittersweet because now he must take the mantle of C.C. the Demon King and spread chaos throughout the world. But despite this, there will always be the love they share as siblings. Another driving force in the series is Nunnally’s best friend Alice (aka the female Suzaku minus the spin kicks): she’s seen hanging with Nunnally a few times within the series, helping her get rid of the bullies mentioned above (by cleverly removing the other girls’ skirts thanks to her geass called ‘The Speed’) and being there when the princess needs her.

”It’s because you’re here that I can keep going to school every day! It’s because you, my best friend, is here!”

Alice in Nunnally’s mind is another source of courage, someone who has the ability to stand up to people and ideals that seem wrong: the power that she lacks even with geass and Nemo.

While Nunnally is all sweet and kind hearted, don’t assume that she can’t get angry. After her brother vanishes, she travels to the Shinjuku Ghetto alone. When she arrives, the girl smells charred flesh and the like.

”I’m such an idiot! What did I think I could do here with legs like mine!? Is it not enough that my mother and the freedom of my body have been taken from me!? Does my brother have to be taken too!? GIVE HIM BACK! GIVE BACK MY PRECIOUS BROTHER!

Of course she has the right to be pissed off: her mother dies right in front of her, and she loses her ability to see and walk all in the same day, gets sent to Japan as a political hostage and goes into hiding. After making the contract with Nemo, the doll takes the form of an albino Nunnally and tells her that as her payment, she had taken all the darkness in her heart. This shows that while the girl shows everyone how sweet and kind she can be, that she too has darker thoughts and feelings. Even when she doesn’t want to acknowledge it.

Despite having these feelings, Nunnally cannot bring herself to do the darker things such as kill or hurt anyone. She is seen talking with Nemo to only disable the Knightmares attacking them and not aim to kill. When Alice reveals herself to be working against them, Nemo tells Nunnally to kill her. However, she refuses to do so and breaks the contract with the instrument, losing her power.

Chosen WEAPON:

Her voice with the ability to 'sway others to her wishes'. Think like Lelouch's Absolute Obedience Geass except that she can turn it off and able to give more than one command. At first it'll be small commands such as 'give me an apple' but once she grows, she'll be able to use it freely and with stronger commands.

First PERSON:

[She doesn’t know the camera is recording but there is a fourteen year old girl sitting on the bed, stroking something in the palm of her hand.]

I’m a little nervous about all of this. I was hoping you be here too and walk beside me like we said we would.

[The girl doesn’t sound scared at all, just a little worried.]

I still can’t believe after everything we’ve done before, we still don’t have that peaceful world we wanted. I know I said I have hope for this world but being brought to a place like this and hearing what happened…it’s disheartening.

[She sighs and looks up.]

I know Lelouch isn’t here and neither are you…not physically at least. I’ll try my best to help these people the best that I can. I won’t let my dream of a kind and gentle world fade away.

Third PERSON:

One could call Nunnally a peaceful person but she knew that she wasn’t a pacifist. Her time with Nemo in battle could say many different things: she wanted to make the people who hurt her brother suffer, wanted the power to protect those she cared about. The girl could’ve been a god if she had opened Heaven’s Door…but she had stopped. She had hope for her broken world and the ability for peace to reign.

So when she found herself walking down the hallways with a woman in purple who was discussing about the state of affairs, it made her heart sink a little. Nunnally got the gist of what she was talking about: rebels fighting against a big world power by using time travel. Funny how everything except the time travel part sounded like what Britannia did back home. She tried to pay attention to the woman but when they reached a vast room where it looked like had weapons from the ceiling to the floor, the girl spoke.

"Why are we here?"

The woman then explained that everyone who arrived there receives a weapon of their choice, which made Nunnally freeze up. She didn’t want to fight again…it hurt too much.

"I’m sorry but I won’t use a weapon."
